Abstract :

  ABSTRACT Breast milk is the first food choice of baby born but not all mothers have to practice since an hour when the baby born. A lot of mother in hurry start to work again and they live in kampoeng with a bad sanitation that influenced of health of the baby. Puskesmas (Health Center) in Surabaya introduce practice early breastfeeding to pregnant mother since 2009. Early breastfeeding practice which colostrums as antibody in breast milk can protect the baby from incident of diarrhea. This research aims to identify the relationship between early breastfeeding practice and diarrhea case of 0–12 months old babies in Pakis Health Center working area in Surabaya. The research was observational with cross-sectional design hold in sample of 92 mother who have baby 0–12 month old which obtained by simple random sampling method. Data collected was secondary data and primary data which was obtained by questionaire interview to baby’s mother about knowledge, breastfeeding practice and incidence of diarrhea. Data analyzed by Chi Square test with α = 0.05. Dependent variables were diarrhea case and babies age of the first diarhea case whereas independent variable was early breastfeeding practice. Research result showed that early breastfeeding practice could decrease baby’s diarrhea case. It found significant negative correlation in significant of early breastfeeding practice and the incidence of diarrhea (ρ = 0.014 OR = 0.313). Baby with early breastfeeding practice very rare suffer from diarrhea. Result also showed negative correlation between early breastfeeding practice and the age of baby got diarrhea (ρ = 0.049 OR = 0.19). The baby have a first diarrhea in three day of live if mother did not practice in early breastfeeding and baby got diarrhea in 90 day of live if mother practice in early breastfeeding. Conclusion is that there was relationship between early breastfeeding practice and babies diarrhea case. Recommendation is that knowledge improvement about early breastfeeding is needed therefore the benefit can be obtained by baby as well as baby’s mother.   Keywords: early breastfeeding inisiation, diarrhea
