Abstract :

Inhaled insulin is a new route of insulin delivery. It offers an alternative and additional means of insulin administration and has been received with particular satisfaction by patients who dislike injections. In humans, inhaled regular insulin is more rapidly absorbed than insulin from the subcutaneous injection. Bioavaibility of inhaled insulin is lower than that of subcutaneous injection because pulmonary delivery of insulin involves some loss of drugs within the inhaler or mouth during inhalation, but this is compensated for by dose. Clinical trials indicate that metabolic control with inhaled insulin is at least comparable to that of subcutaneous insulin. Side effects observed in human trials was hypoglycemia, dry cough which tends to diminish over time, a slight drop in pulmonary function that does not progress and is reversible if treatment is discontinued, and increased stimulation of insulin antibody formation that cease after some time.
