Abstract :
Nine captivated Sumatran elephants in Saree Terminal for Human-Wild Elephant Conflict Resolution (THWECR) Aceh were used in this study. Blood samples were collected by using a heparinized-Terumo venoject. Determination of total protein and calcium content in the blood was carried out by agarose gel electrophoresis method using Helena Titan gel serum protein system Cat. No. 3041 and kolorimetry method using Roche calcium Kit MPR 2 Cat. No. 1553593, respectively. The results showed that total protein content in the blood plasma of Sumatran elephants tested range from 7.66 – 9.25 g/dl, with the average 8.56 0.55 g/dl. Total plasma protein in male elephants (8.20 0.66 g/dl) was slightly lower than that in female elephants (8.66 0.53 g/dl). Plasma calcium content in the female Sumatran elephants tested range from 8.36 – 12.8 mg/dl with the average 10.66 1.65 mg/dl. Fractions of plasma protein were: albumin 3.28 0.25 g/dl, 1-globulin 736.63 58.31 mg/dl, 2-globulin 535.23 138.36 mg/dl, and -globulin 4.23 0.93 g/dl. In conclusion, total protein and calcium content in the blood plasma of Aceh Sumatran elephants Saree THWECR were in the range that in blood plasma of Asian elephants.
