      Abstract :

Objective. Anti-inflammatory therapy with nedocromil is recommended in mild asthma. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of Tilade inhaler in the prevention asthma therapy in children and to observe the difference of lung functions in two groups. Method. Twenty-eight children of 6 through 14 years of age with mild asthma were recruited in this study. We assigned 14 children to receive Tilade inhaler 4 mg four times daily for 2 weeks, continued with 4 mg twice daily for 12 weeks. The rest of 14 children served as control group. All children received theophyline and salbutamol for asthma symptoms. Results. There was no difference in FEV-1 reversibility between Tilade group and control group from visit 1 to visit 4 except visit 5, but significant decline in FEV-1 pre-bronchodilator at visit 5, FVC pre-bronchodilator at visit 2 and 5, and FVC post-bronchodilator at visit 2 and 5, were observed in control group compared with Tilade group. Clinical indices were significantly improved in Tilade group as indicated by the decrease of frequency of asthmatic attack, total days of asthmatic attack, severity of asthmatic attack, school days loss, addition of steroid and emergency visits. Adverse drug reactions were not observed in either tilade group or control group. Conclusion. Tilade inhaler is effective as a preventive asthma therapy in children as indicated by improvement of frequency of asthmatic attack, total days of asthmatic attack, severity of asthmatic attack, school day loss, and addition of steroid and emergency visits. The improvements of lung functions were indicated by significant difference in FEV-1 reversibility at visit 5, FVC pre-brochodilator at visit 2 in favor of Tilade group. There was no adverse drug reaction related to Tilade observed in this study.
