Abstract :

This study aims at exploring a reality of the top consumption ethos growth of urbanist clans at an architectural space called ”shopping mall”. Symbolically, the architectural space has dramatized a new meaning. Paradigmatically, the shopping malls have meanings either as ‘new means of consumption’ or as ‘cathedrals of consumption’ (both according to George Ritzer’s version). Starting with the both ideas—that could be exchanged each other this study tries to put to use an analysis by metaphor ways, about the consumerism ‘sacred’ environment, by taking the case study of Panakkukang Mall in Makassar. Finally, this study reveals that Panakkukang Mall, either as a ‘new means of consumption’ or a ‘cathedrals of consumption’ could be analogized as a sacred environment that able to control the mall’s visitors into behavior toward consumerism life style.
