Abstract :

Etnisitas, ras, dan klas sosial mempunyai peranan yang signifikan terhadap pola perilaku politik di dalam sejarah panjang sistem politik Amerika Serikat. Orang-orang Amerika dengan latarbelakang etnis, ras, dan klas sosial yang berbeda cenderung mempunyai perilaku memilih tertentu yang berpengaruh besar terhadap hasil akhir pemilu. Dengan mengambil kasus kelompok orang-orang Hitam asal Afrika (African Americans), terutama konteks sejarah perjuangan panjang bagaimana mereka memperoleh hak-hak sipilnya, tulisan ini menyimpulkan hal-hal berikut. Pertama, opresi dan sejarah panjang perjuangan memperoleh hak-hak sipil orang-orang Hitam asal Afrika, membuktikan bahwa etnisitas, ras, dan klas sosial ternyata mempunyai peranan penting dalam perilaku politik di Amerika Serikat. Kedua, hal ini sangat dimungkinkan oleh dibukanya kesempatan yang sama dalam lapangan kerja dan arena politik yang dijamin oleh pemerintah dan sistem politik Amerika Serikat. Ketiga, kecenderungan perubahan dan dinamika komposisi etnis, ras, dan klas sosial yang diakibatkan oleh kebijakan imigrasi, memungkinkan variabel-variabel etnis, ras, dan klas sosial semakin mempunyai pengaruh penting terhadap masa depan kontur politik Amerika Serikat.
