Abstract :
The objective of this study was to determine if short courses of metformin administration in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) would reduce insulin resistant and improve the efficacy of clomiphene citrate (CC) to induce ovulation. This study was using a randomized prospective trial involving 33 subjects with PCOS and infertility. The setting of this study was infertility outpatients’ clinic Dr. Soetomo Hospital Surabaya from July 2007 until January 2008. The samples of this study were patients with PCOS were treated either with CC + metformin (Group 1) for 2 weeks or CC. SHBG level increase in two groups after treatment, but SHBG level in group CC + metformin increase significant than group CC (p = 0.003); 79% of subjects ovulating in the CC + metformin group compare 46% CC group (p = 0.008). One subject in group CC + metformin conceived. The conclusion is 2 weeks administered metformin could reduce insulin resistance; it would impact on increase SHBG level and improve the efficacy of CC to induction.
