Abstract :

Kata kunci: Ganefo, nasionalisme, Olimpiade, Orde Lama, sepak bolaAbstractSport is one of the sectors being the concern of the government to develop more seriously after the Independence.  Sport, especially  football,  was  significant  in  introducing  Indonesia  and  in  proving the existence of the new nation globally. Football is the most popular sport in the world because almost every country in the world plays and develops the sport, so that success and achievement in world’s football competitions would make the nation proud and at the same time raise the image of the country in the eyes of the world. This article aims to investigate the reason football was utilized to confirm the existence of Indonesia in the Olympics, especially during the Old Order era (1945-1966). Historical Method was used as a research method by using the archives and the mass media as the primary source. These resources were then scrutinized and analyzed to produce the writing of history(historiography). The research found that football could be used to evoke the spirit of nationalism. Nationalism is not only in forms of struggle by taking up arms, but can be shown through engaging in  sport.  Although  the  Indonesian  state  was  not  yet  formed,  PSSI  (Persatuan  Sepak  Bola  Seluruh Indonesia/Indonesian Football Association) had affirmed ‘Indonesianness’ through football. Football had  a  diplomatic  mission  to  introduce  Indonesian  football  and  served  as  Indonesian  campaign to support the country. Indonesian government intended to create a positive image of the nation through the sport. The participation of Indonesian soccer team in international sporting events and inGanefo (Games of the New Emerging Forces) was an effort to demonstrate the existence of the nation in international community through sport. Keywords: Ganefo, football, nationalism, Old Order, Olympic
