Abstract :

Kata kunci: fixie, multikulturalisme, ruang sosial, subkulturAbstractThe  trend  of  riding fixed  gear  bike  on  the  streets  may  come  from  the  bicycle  messengers,  who have  been  employed  since  nineteenth  century  to  handle  the  transferring  task  from  one  place  to another as fast as they can. From bicycle messengers, the practice of “fixie” has been adapted among contemporary hipsters of urban cities in several parts of the world such as Europe, America and Japan. Its context has also changed from being practised within working hours to leisure time gaiety. This paper aims to focus on what has been less discussed in the growing literature of bike communities. It specifically examines the fixed gear bike subculture in Sydney to establish whether this particular subculture has an ideology beyond its practice and style or it merely represents a kind of consumer culture. The paper also pays attention to the attitudes of the members towards cultural diversity within their community. The data collection method was in-depth interviews with bikers in SSS (Sydney Sunday Session), the biggest fixed gear bike community in Sydney. Using snowball technique, the research recruited three informants who were willing to participate in the research. Analysing the data through subculture theoretical lens, the research found that beauty and fashion are one of the main reasons in riding “fixie” as the bike keep them looking “cool” on the streets. The fixed gear bike community also expands social space, knowledge and tolerance. In a multicultural society like Sydney, knowledge and tolerance are significant as they help foster a sense of being Australian, in which multiculturalism is one of the values. Keywords: fixie, multiculturalism, subculture, social space
