Cognitive behavioral therapy as a treatment for auditory hallucinations in paranoid schizophrenia

Abstract :

Paranoid schizophrenia is one of coping mechanism against stresful life event. One of the symptoms that causes disability in individuals with paranoid schizophrenia is auditory hallucinations. Assessment of specific symptoms related to auditory hallucinations can be used PSYRATS and BAVQ-R. Auditory hallucinations described as a phenomenon in reality inserts (intrusion into awareness). This intrusion had been misintepretated as voices caused by the wrong individual set of beliefs, and had been projected out. When misintepretation and projection occurs continuously, causing the prefrontal cortex become less developed. The result is disconnectivity syndrome, so that these voices have a certain character personification (a complex hallucinations) and is involuntary. The target of the application of cognitive-behavioral therapy for auditory hallucinations are invited individuals to evaluate their beliefs, which underlies the emergence of auditory hallucinations. Cognitive- behavioral therapy focuses to train adaptive coping skills to form a new set of beliefs to auditory hallucinations. This therapeutic approach can be done using the Socratic Questioning cognitive intervention, while behavioral approach could use reality testing. The therapist may use cognitive interventions to establish a new while behavioral, or using behavioral experiments to form a new self statement.
