Abstract :

Background: Literature reports that mother of children with autism showed more psychological distress than other member in their families, as they are the primary caregivers for their children. Methods: This research design was  cross sectional observational analytic. Subjects were asked to fill Caregiver Burden Assessment and Personal Resource Questionnaire. Results: Thirty subjects participated in this study. Sixteen subjects (53,3%) were categorized to have high perceived social support, and 14 subjects (46,7%) had moderate perceived social support. No one had low perceived social support. Fifteen subjects (50%) were categorized to have moderate caregiver burden, 13 subjects (43,3%) had high caregiver burden, 1 subjects (3,3%) had extremely high caregiver burden, and 1 subjects (3,3%) had low caregiver burden. On mother’s characteristic: mother’s educational status and therapy payment facility were found to have correlation to caregiver burden. Social support had no correlation to caregiver burden. Conclusion: In this research, social support had no correlation to caregiver burden. Mothers had high perceived social support, but they also had high caregiver burden. It is likely that  caregiver burden on mothers of children with autism was more related to the child’s disability and its impact to the caregiver’s life.
