Abstract :

Background: Cisplatin-paclitaxel is one of common chemotherapy regimen that has been used in head and neck cancer. One of the main side effect of cisplatin-paclitaxel is decrease of hematopoietic cells. This condition could cause decrease of hemoglobin (Hb), neutrophil and platelet. The purpose of this study is to prove the decrease of Hb, neutrophil and platelet post cisplatin-paclitaxel chemotherapy in head and neck cancer patients at ORL-HNS Teratai surgery ward of Dr. Soetomo hospital. Method: All head and neck cancer patients in ORL-HNS oncology OPD who got cisplatin-paclitaxel chemotherapy in ORL-HNS Teratai Surgery Ward, that met inclusion and exlusion criterias were selected by consecutive sampling and examined for Hb level, neutrophil count and platelet count pre and post chemotherapy. The results were analyzed statistically by paired t2 samples test. Result: there were33 patients, 23 male and 10 female with comparison 2,3 : 1. There was significant difference of Hb level (p=0.000), neutrophil count (p=0.000) and platelet count (p=0.000) postcisplatin-paclitaxel chemotherapy. Percentage of decreased Hb level was 10.61%, decreased neutrophil count was 38.06%and decreasedplatelet count was 13.21%. Conclusion: The study concluded that there weredecrease of Hb, neutrophil and platelet post cisplatin-paclitaxel chemotherapy in head and neck malignant tumor patients at ORL-HNS Teratai surgery ward of Dr. Soetomo General Hospital.
