Abstract :

Using the concept of structuralism, I aim to explore the meaning behind the architectural design of the palace which communicates the power of the Sultan of Yogyakarta. This study is a combination of field and literary research. Based on the analysis on the structure of the landscape of the palace of Yogyakarta, Sultan  Hamengkubuwono  I  (and  his  successors)  communicate  that  the  king  of  Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat kingdom has the most power and is the center of the kingdom, the spiritual life of the people, the axis of the world, the worldly life, the source of fertility in the area, the resolution of conflict among people, the body of the nature, the growth of human life, the power, and the source of life. This help us understand further why the king has been a prominent figure in the province. Not only legitimated through myths, stories, and legends, the king is justified through its position in the palace as reflected in the landscape and design of the palace. Keywords: architectural design, King of Yogyakarta, palace, structuralism
