Abstract :
Maltase is an enzyme which exists on brush border membrane especially in jejuna mucosa cells. The maltase functions to hydrolyze maltose become glucose molecule. Lower activity of maltase is caused by Gastroenteritis which has diarrhea symptom due to LPS induction. Because LPS is a component on the outer membrane of gram-negative bacteria, endotoxin, it can stimulate the production of ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species) to make inflammation. Rattus norvegicus was used as a model and it was treated some procedures, such as LPS induction with dose of 2.5 mg/kg weight, determination of maltase activity using Nelson Somogyi method, and it’s molecular weight and Hematoxylen-Eosin staining of jejunum. LPS induction can damage the jejuna mucosa cells which were showed by the histological pictures and the loss of some protein bands. The average of maltase activity isolated from Rattus norvegicus jejuna that has been induced by LPS and control were 19.05±0.03 Unit and 21.89±0.04 Unit respectively. The induction of LPS will decrease the maltase crude activity significantly.
