Abstract :

Leachate produced by anaerobic decomposition of refusal open dumping area can polute water sources in its surrounding. Therefore theaim of this study was to measure water chemical quality of dug wells and to analyze correlation between the distance of refusal open dumpingto water chemical quality of dug wells in surrounding community. This study was a cross-sectional observasional study. Water chemical quality including hardness of water (CaCO3), nitrite (NO2), nitrate(NO3), sulfat (SO4), iron (Fe), and zink (Zn) were measured from 29 water samples of its surrounding dug wells in July 2002. Hardness ofwater (CaCO3) was measured by titrimetic method, while nitrite (NO2), nitrate (NO3), sulfat (SO4), iron (Fe), and zink (Zn) were measuredby spectrophotometry.Levels of hardness (853.14 ± 564.34 mg/l) and iron (1.27 ± 1.81 mg/l) of dug well water were higher than the maximum allowableconcentration of clean water according to Permenkes 416/Menkes/Per/IX/1990. Whereas levels of nitrite, nitrate, sulfat and zink were stillbelow the maximum allowable concentration. Su lfat parameter had positive cor relation to the distance from open dumping area (Spearman’scorrelation test, r = 0.53, p < 0.01). While Zink parameter had negative correlation to the distance from open dumping area (Spearman’scorrelation test, r = -0.38, p < 0.05). Other parametrs were not correlated to the distance from open dumping area.It is concluded that dug well water in open dumping surrounding community is not meet chemical quality of clean water according toPermenkes 416/Menkes/Per/ IX/1990. There is no clear association between the distance from open dumping area and chemical quality of dugwell water in its surrounding community. It needs further study that includes the confounding variables such as characteristics of leachate, topography, soil, underground water stream and location of domestic sewe r.
