Abstract :

This study aims at analyzing the reason of Indonesia declaring interest in joining Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) in 2015 through the statement of President Joko Widodo delivered at a meeting with President Barack Obama during his visit to the United States in Washington DC on October 26th, 2015. This raises questions from the writer given that Indonesia has previously refused the invitation of the United States in terms of joining the trade block presented at the 19th APEC Summit in Hawaii, USA in 2011. Within this study, the writer uses the concept of dynamic equilibrium and the theory of hedging strategy in order to analyze the reason of Indonesia declaring interest in joining TPP. The data are collected in the form of qualitative using literature study. The result shows that Indonesia’s reason in declaring interest to join TPP is a strategy amid the rivalry of the United States and China in Asian region by adopting the option of return maximizing. In implementing the hedging strategy, on the one hand, Indonesia acts as a bandwagoner by being close to the United States through TPP in order to maximize economic benefits, yet on the other hand, such action is Indonesia’s soft balancing effort regarding China’s emerging economy in Asia
