Abstract :
Malaysia is a country in Southeast Asia with economic power in the world is taken into account. Although regarded as an economic power superior, Malaysia is still classified as a country of upper middle-income, with a GNI per capita of 10 570 USD in 2015, lags behind neighboring Singapore, which has become the high-income with GNI per capita of 52 090 American dollars. Malaysia stagnant economic growth and according to the indicator by the World Bank, has got stuck in the middle-income trap. This study seeks to provide an explanation of the factors that make it difficult for Malaysia to escape the middle-income country status. The author proposes the hypothesis that the presence of Bumiputera in Malaysia policy encouraging the growth of a culture of cronyism in Malaysia's political and economic implications are then limiting factors of economic growth in Malaysia. Malaysian Bumiputera policy embodied in rights - privileges to ethnic Malays over non-Malay ethnic prone then lead to the practice of rent-seeking which is the beginning of cronyism.
