Abstract :

Population density is a population problem that is still one of the major problems in Indonesia, especially in East Java. The Population density was caused by fertility, while it was affected by preference of number of children. Thisresearch aimed to analyze the infl uence of fertile couple’s characteristics on wife’s preferences of children. Thisresearch involved 93 fertile couples that were selected using simple random sampling. The results of the bivariateanalysis, factor that affected for wife’s preferences of the number of children were age of husband, age of wife,age of fi rst marriage wife, wives education, employment status of wife. Multivariate analysis with multiple logisticregression (p < 0.05), results showed that age of wife (p value = 0.037 and Exp (B) = 0.177), age of fi rst marriagewife (p value = 0.018 and Exp (B) = 12,289), education of wife (p value = 0.011 and Exp (B) = 0.086), and wifeemployment status (p value = 0.011) and Exp (B) = 5.183) were signifi cant. In this study it can be concludedthat the age of wife, age of fi rst marriage wife, education of wife and wife employment status were affected wife’spreference of number of children. The couple of childbearing age should plan and regulate their family together,especially to deciding number of children.
