Abstract :

Keluarga Berencana (KB) is a government program that aims to control the population as well as efforts to improve the welfare of the community through efforts to regulate the birth spacing of children, the ideal age of childbirth, and the effort of a prime pregnancy. The program is implemented as a health promotion activity, with various contraceptive products to attain a prosperous and qualified family. A conducted survey resulted that the most widely used type of contraception is hormonal contraceptions with their principal mechanism affecting endogenous hormones to prevent pregnancy. As active pharmaceutical ingredients, hormones have their potential to cause side effects. Among the people, there are still many who believe in the stigma of unacceptable side effects, so it needs to be straightened out with the facts of health. Based on the phenomenon, it is necessary to discuss the facts and myths about the side effects of hormonal contraception. In finding out the less appropriate stigma in the community, a survey was conducted by distributing questionnaires and visiting KB acceptor as individual separately at some area in Surabaya. The results obtained in the community showed that at the beginning, 59% of KB acceptors choose the type of contraceptive to be used by their own preferences, although almost all acceptors claimed to be concerned about side effects (52%). Given the importance of the KB program objectives, all health providers (midwives, doctors, pharmacists, and KB cadres) should be directed and educated, especially on side effects, so that each acceptor can use the most appropriate and safest type of contraception to use so they can get the best benefits.
