Abstract :
Systemic changes in global political economy has forced countries to engage more actively and more cautiously in managing their economic relations with other actors at the international level. Within this framework, economic diplo-macy becomes the most important instrument for countries, and hence the (in)ability of a country to conduct economic diplomacy is more crucial than ever. Using Kishan S. Rana’s typology of economic diplomacy, this paper finds that Indonesia’s economic diplomacy can be categorised as traditional in nature, although several of its elements can also be categorised as niche-focused and evolving. Despite the fact that there has been a paradigm shift regarding this view, the changes haven’t been significant and is sporadic in nature. Therefore, changes are required in five elements of Indonesian econo-mic diplomacy, namely external economic management, policy management, role of non-state actors and economic aid to achieve a more comprehensive and inclusive strategy for Indonesian economic diplomacy
