Abstract :
Mexico, along with United States and Canada made a deal toward regional free tradearea, known as NAFTA which effectively operated in January 1st 1994. By signingNAFTA, Mexico held the commitment to reduce tariff in agricultural commodityin turn to decrease United States and Canada’s trade barrier and restriction. Butthis economic integration obtains a protest from domestic people represented byZapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) in the same date of NAFTA operationalisation.The motive behind the rebellion was suffers and poverty enduredby indigenous people in Chiapas, mainly because of NAFTA and free trade. But thedomestic restrain did not stop Mexico President, Carlos Salinas, to fulfill Mexico’scommitment toward NAFTA. This paper aims to explain reason and factor that driveSalinas signing NAFTA although there was domestic uprising happened in Mexico,focusing on individuality of Salinas as main actor in decision making process.
