Abstract :

People’s participation in Posyandu (Pos Pelayanan Terpadu=Village Comprehensive Health Post) in the working area of Denpasar Timur I Public Health Center (PHC), Denpasar City as health service facility was still low for the last three years. This condition was reflected in the low coverage of under-five children attending Posyandu, the low number of health cadres during Posyandu working hours and the lack of active role of community leaders and health personnel in Posyandu. The objective of the research is to formulate a recommendation on the importance of efforts necessary to be taken taken to boost people’s participation through an analysis of Posyandu stakeholders’ factors in the PHC working area. The research employed an observational-analytic design using cross-sectional study approach. The samples consisted of mothers of under-five children, Posyandu cadres, community leaders and health personnel. Data were collected through questionnaires and observation sheets. The results revealed some strategic issues related to Posyandu’s existence, suggesting that the type of health service that was needed by mothers was not available at Posyandu; mothers’ expectation of Posyandu, cadres, and of health personnel was unsatisfactory; mothers’ lacked of knowledge on Posyandu; poor mothers’ perception of Posyandu; cadres’ less skilled in performing their tasks at Posyandu; cadres’ expectation on health service users, community leaders and the Posyandu working group was unsatisfactory; the perception of PHC health personnel toward Posyandu was poor; and health personnel did not voluntary engage in Posyandu activity based on their superior’s task/appointment. A recommendation was formulated to boost people’s participation in Posyandu’s activity.
