Abstract :

For the five past years, the number of student enrollees has decreased 18.4% at the Surabaya Yarsis Nursing Academy (SYNA). An analysis was performed based on the preferences and choices theories. The research aims to analyze preferences and choices on nursing education. This was a descriptive survey. The samples consisted of high school students totaling to 72 respondents, and students of the SYNA, the RKZ, and the Hang Tuah Nursing Academies totaling to 72 respondents. Conducted in May and June 2006 the samples were collected by random sampling method. Interviews and questionnaires were research instruments, data then coded according to respondents’ motivation in terms of continuing education. The result showed that respondents from high-school: 1 (14.3%) had a high preference on nursing education and intended to enroll to the Hang Tuah Nursing Academy with a long-term plan of enrolling into the military. Respondents from Nursing Academies: 20 (27.8%) intended to continue their education at a Nursing Academy, 7 (35%) of them chose the SYNA, 9 (45%) chose the RKZ Nursing Academy, 4 (20%) chose the Hang Tuah Nursing Academy. The research concluded that high-school respondents who have high preferences on nursing education have a tendency not to choose the SYNA.
