Abstract :

The emergence of erotic novels in Indonesia has become an interesting phenomenon. A large amount of sexual contents in erotic novel is not only depicted in foreign novels, but Indonesian authors have gradually embedded vulgar scenes in their works. This study aimed to investigate the translation of taboo words in Bared to You novel by Sylvia Day from English into Indonesian. A qualitative approach was employed in analysing the data extracted from the odd chapters of the novel. The data were classified using Allan and Burridge’s taboo categorisation, and translation strategies were further identified using the framework proposed by Baker. Then, Toury’s concept of translation norms was applied in determining the tendency of norms governed in the process of translating. From the findings and analysis, 253 taboo words were found and classified into three categories, namely bodies and their effluvia (1.58%); organs and acts of sex (93.68%); and, naming and addressing (4.74%). Regarding to translation strategies, there were only 4 out of 8 strategies employed in translating taboos. It is discovered that the translation of Bared to You comprises the norms of source text and target text. At the end, the translation of this novel into Indonesian still retaining the adequacy and bearing the acceptability of the novel itself for target readers.
