Abstract :

When we are discussing topics that are considered sensitive, such as death, religion, excretion, and sex, the use of euphemism is very helpful. There is always the tendency to protect the “face”, especially in the media. This research examines the euphemism formations, according to Allan’s (2012) classification of euphemism formations, for death and sickness, and sexual terms in Dr. Oz Indonesia talk show. The data was taken from the euphemisms used by the speaker in the selected video. The selected videos were taken only from segments of the show that discuss related topics. The used euphemisms then were analysed by putting them on table and classified them one by one by how they are formed. The findings show that the euphemisms are formed by using clipping, general-for-specific, circumlocution, litotes, hyperbole, substitution, and verbal play. The use of euphemism becomes the solution for all these problems that arise in sensitive communication. Euphemism does not only give a more positive connotation to a negative context, but also protects, at the same time, maintains the face of both of the participants.
