Abstract :

Abstract   This research is an ethnographic study of life and social environment of “togel” (toto gelap) gambler in Pasuruan. Pasuruan known as “Kota Santri” who holds fast to the traditions of Islamic culture, but there are still gambling activity within the society. “Togel” gambling activities in Pasuruan can be found in several places and public facilities, the problem is the “togel” gambling activities are prohibited by law, but it creates addiction in society. Cultural theory by Spradley and adaptive dynamics by Bennet used to analyze this phenomenon. The result of this research are the pattern of activity of the “togel” gamblers and the division of labor within the gambling system explaining the factors that cause  gamblers rely  on gambling activities. It also affects the “togel” port to use adaptation strategies to keep the “togel” gambling activity. The adaptation strategies are: by using learning process to develop skills, using the internet “togel” gambling sites, borrow money in the bank, friends, and family to solve the economic problem caused by bankrupt, maintaining customer trust and crew, maintaining network security by paying security forces routinely.
