Abstract :

Acetosal is a compound that has analgesic, antipyretic and anti inflammation properties when used in a high dose (500-1000 mg/day). At lower dose (801-160 mg/day), acetosal can act as anti platelet for patients with infark miokard. The content of free salicylic acid in acetosal tablets may aggravate the side effect of acetosal, which is irritating stomach. This side effect must been given a special attention especially when it is used for prolonging treatment in patients with stroke or ischemia cerebral. The purpose of this research is to determine free salicylic acid in acetosal tablet whether its amount is over the required limit according to Indonesian Pharmacopeia IV. Five brand name of acetosal tablets (A, B, C, D, and E) were analyzed using HPLC instrument and 0.2 % sodium 1-hexanesulfonate in water : acetonitrile (85:15) pH 3.4 used as mobile phase. The chromatogram results showed that A and B did not show peak of free salicylic acid, while the others (C, D, and E) showed peak of free salicylic acid. C sample contains 0.14 % ± 0.01 of free salicylic acid, D and E tablet contains 0.15 % ± 0.01 and 0.07 % ± 0.00 of free salicylic acid, respectively. Although there were three samples of acetosal tablets that contain free salicylic acid, but they still meet the requirement as mentioned in Indonesian Pharmacopeia IV.
