Comparison of serum estrogen and plasma transforming growth factor Β-1 (tgf Β-1) levels in benign prostatic hyperplasia (bph)–non bph patients over 50 years old and younger (30-40 years old)

Abstract :
The objective of this study was to compare serum estrogen and plasma transforming growth factor β-1 (TGF β-1) levels in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) – non BPH patients over 50 years old and younger (30-40 years old) in Dr Soetomo Hospital Surabaya. A prospective case control study was conducted on 30 patients with BPH over 50 years old (1st group); non BPH patients over 50 years old (2nd group); and younger, 30-40 years old, (3rd group) from October 2005 to January 2006 in Dr Soetomo Hospital Surabaya. Data were collected from patients attending to the outpatient department and hospitalized patients. We compared serum estrogen and plasma TGF β-1 levels between the 1st and 2nd groups, and between the 2nd and 3rd groups. Thirty patients were included, no significant differences were found in serum estrogen level between the 1st and 2nd groups as well as the 2nd and 3rd groups (p>0.05). There were significant differences in plasma TGF β-1 levels between the 1st and 2nd groups (p0.05). Conclusively, BPH is not only dependent on estrogen and TGF β-1 levels, but other factors such as dietary, genetic, neurotransmitters, and immunologic factors were implicated in the pathogenesis of BPH development. In elderly patients with BPH, there were increased estrogen levels and decreased TGF β-1 levels in circulation.
