Abstract :
Regarding the increased numbers of children detected with growth disorders and the efforts to increase the quality of human resources, evaluation of growth disorder needs to be done as early as possible, especially in the first year of life. To early detect babies with growth disorders in their first year of life using Vineland Social Maturity Scale (VSMS) and look for correlation between VSMS result and breast milk, formula, or breast milk and formula, the mothers education and occupation, the babys position in the family, and the number of educative toys. This was a cross sectional study using 120 samples randomly selected from visitors of Healthy Baby Clinic in BKIA RSK St. Vincentius a Paulo Surabaya, aged between three months to one year old. The observation was done for a year within the period of April 1, 2006 to July 30, 2006. Interpretation of growth based on Vineland Social Maturity Scale. Result found 5 babies (4.2%) had average level of social maturity and 16 babies (13.3%) had low level of social maturity. From statistical analysis it was found that social maturity level was significantly correlated with breast milk, formula, or breast milk and formula, the mothers education and occupation, the childrens keeper, and the number of educative toys (p<0.05). We conclude that early detection of growth disorders needs to be done so that intervention can be applied as soon as possible to avoid growth defect. Breast milk, formula, or breast milk and formula, the mothers education and occupation, the childrens keeper, and the number of educative toys are risk factors affecting growth disorders.
