Fecal material (fm) in appendiceal lumen: acute or chronic inflammation?

Abstract :

As a part of digestive tract, appendix is often subjected to inflammation, which is generally marked by lower right abdominal pain with different grades. It may be accompanied with high fever, requiring surgical procedure to prevent more hazardous complications. Mild pain may also be found at McBurney point. A retrospective study of 22 patient post appendictomy carried out at Dr. Muwardi Hospital from January to July 2003, were reviewed for its histopathological view, IL-1, IL-6, TNF-α, as acute inflammatory cytokine, and IFN-γ as chronic inflammatory cytokine. All data were analyzed in this cross-sectional study using discriminant analyses. The result showed that IFN-γ rised as discriminator cytokine between appendicitis with and without fecal material (FM) in the lumen of the appendices (p < 0.05). In the account of Eigen value there were some canonical correlations (0.462) between FM and IFN-γ. It ndicated some strong correlations. Conclusively, FM or fecalith has some correlations with chronic inflammation.
