Review article: hysterosalpingography as a diagnostic test of female infertility

Abstract :

Histerosalpingography (HSG) or uterosalpingography is a diagnosis tools often used for examining infertile couples. A study on 300 females reported that HSG has a sensitivity of 98% and specificity 35% to find abnormalities within the uterine cavity in infertile patients if hysteroscopy is used as gold standard (Sperrof 2005). Primary indication of HSG is the examination in infertile couple, abnormal uterine bleeding, and repeated abortus. In addition, it is also indicated for therapy in cases such as the attachment of uterine cavity wall (Asherman's syndrome) and blocked uterine tube (Abramowicz 1994; Soules 1995). HSG contraindication is infection (cervicitis, endometritis, salpingitis), bleeding and pregnancy. The complication of HSG are iodine allergy, pelvic infection, pain during the procedure, granulomatous inflammation, emboly and radiation effect.
