Family training education with booklet as media and dietary management for patients with diabetes mellitus

Abstract :

Introduction: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder characterized by high glucose level that occurs due to abnormal insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. Patient with DM usually not comply the diet because of getting bored with chronic disease management which must be conducted continuously, without time limit. Diet uncompliance can increase high glucose level and risk of complication. This research was aimed to examine the influence of family training education on dietary management for patients with DM. Method: A quasy experimental design was used in this research. The population was family of patients with DM recorded at Puskesmas Driyorejo, Gresik. Samples were 36 respondents, devided into two groups (intervention and control group). Independent variable was  family training education with booklet, while dependent variables were dietary management for patients with DM (examined from family’s knowledge and action). Data was collected by using questionnaire, then analyzed by using Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and Mann Whitney Test with significant value p<0,05. Result: The results showed that family training education had no influence on dietary management for patient with DM. Discussion: It can be concluded that family training education with booklet as media had no effect on dietary management of patient with DM. Next research should conduct the sama intervention with different length of time and add more variables.
