The correlation between family support with elderly independency in doing activity daily living

Abstract :

Aging is a natural process that cannot be prevented and always causes problems, both physically, mentally, socially and economically, so it may reduce the independence of elderly in accomplishing activities daily living. If it is not addressed it may result in declined health status of the elderly, so that family support is needed to improve their physical and mental well-being. This study aimed to determine the correlation between family support with elderly independency in doing activity daily living. Design used was correlational study with cross-sectional approach. Samples were selected by purposive sampling, comprising 34 elderly and their families who met the inclusion criteria. Data were collected by using questionnaires and observation. Data were analyzed by chi-square with α<0,05. Results revealed that most types of family support was the support of respect. Most of the elderly, as many as 64.1%, have been independent in accomplishing daily activities. Chi-square correlation test indicated significant correlation between family support was related to the independence of elderly in accomplishing activities daily living (p=0,048). It can be concluded from this study that there was significant correlation between family support and the independence of elderly in accomplishing activities daily living. Families should enhance their instrumental, informative, respect, and emotional support to the elder. Health workers were expected to enhance cooperation with health volunteers to inform the importance of family support to increase the independence of elder. Further studies should use standardized instrument to obtain better result.
