Abstract :

Menopausal women often experience a decrease in the production of estrogen, progesterone and other sex hormones. Decreased estrogen levels will be followed by a decrease in calcium absorption if the diet is calcium-deficient. This led to calcium re-absorption in bone, resulting in porosity and fragility. Maintaining bone density can be done by undergoing physical activity (exercise) on a regular basis. The purpose of this study was to identify correlation between physical activity and  the risk of osteoporosis in postmenopause women. Design used was descriptive analytic. Population comprised all women aged 48-60 years, members of PKK at RT 02 RW 01 Kelurahan Komplek Kenjeran, Surabaya. Sample were taken by purposive sampling technique, obtaining as many as 27 respondents. Data obtained were processed using Spearman's Rho with α≤0.01. Results showed  that p (Sig.) = 0.000, r=-0.699, indicating that physical activity variables had correlation with the risk of osteoporosis in post menopause women. In conclusion, physical activity correlates with the risk of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. Health volunteers can provide health education on the importance of exercise (gymnastics for elderly) to prevent any risk of osteoporosis.
