Abstract :

This researchis intended to study the psychological needs ofthe elderly people on successful aging and social support. This study is an exploratory research, therefore the descriptive analysis method was used.  The  subjects  of  this  study  were 200  elderly  people;  100  elderly  people  from  Surabaya, Indonesia  and 100 elderly people of Selangor ,  Malaysia. The research data were collected using a scale of Successful Aging and Social Support, forms and sources of social support and the efforts to achieve a successful aging. The results showed that elderly people in Indonesia reached successful aging,  while in  Malaysia, most  of  the  elderly  (97%)  reached  successful  aging,  but  the  rest  3%  subjects feel  they  had  no  successful  aging.  Subjects  from  Indonesia  had  medium to  high  category  of  successful aging and social support. The average, successful aging and social support of elderly in Malaysia is higher than in Indonesia. In addition, the forms of social support needed by the elderly in Indonesia and Malaysia are the support of information such as health information, education, entertainment, and  social  activity.  The  second  forms  of  social  support  needed  by  the  elderly  in  Indonesia  and Malaysia are  support,  encouragement,  moral and  spiritual  support.  Sources  of  social  support  for elderly  in  Indonesia  are  from  family ,  friends,  community ,  and  professional.  Meanwhile, the  necessary supports  for  elderly  in  Malaysia  come  from  family ,  neighbors,  friends  and  professionals.  Efforts required  in  order  to  getsuccessful  aging  for  elderly  in  Indonesia  aredoing  activities,  formed friendships,  and  also  worship. On  the  other  hand,  for  elderly  in  Malaysia arethrough  worship, formed friendship and also doingactivities. Forms of activity that can provide successful aging for elderly in Indonesia  are raising  children,  making family happy  and helping others. While the  activities that  can provide  successful  aging  for  elderly  in  Malaysia are  caring  for  others,  worship, and  helping  those  who need  help.
