Abstract :

When a husband is suffering from an illness, his wife will serve as the primary caregiver (Magai,1996). As a spouse caregiver, a wife is more at risk for experiencing caregiver strain, where she canfeel the strain as the result of physical, emotional, cognitive or social development problemexperienced by her husband. This study is a correlational study aimed to determine the relationshipbetween caregiver strain and marital satisfaction among wives as a spouse caregiver of strokepatients. Caregiver strain is a perception or a feeling of difficulty on the task and responsibility infulfilling the role as caregiver (Oncology Nursing Society, 2008; Factor & Weiner, 2008). Maritalsatisfaction is defined as attitude of greater or lesser favorability toward one's own maritalrelationship (Roach, Frazier & Bowden, 1981). The instruments which are used in this study are TheModified Caregiver Strain Index (MCSI) developed by Robinson in 1983 and has been modified byThornton & Travis in 2003, and Marital Satisfaction Scale developed by Roach, Frazier & Bowden in1981. The participants who were included in this study were 30 people. The results showed that thereis no significant relationship between caregiver strain and marital satisfaction among wives as aspouse caregiver of stroke patients.
