Abstract :
The child sex industry is lucrative and has expanded rapidly in Thailand. About 10 million tourists arrive in Thailand each year; 60% of them are males and of those, 70% come specifically for sex. Thailand is considered a hub for sexual exploitation in the Greater Mekong Sub-Region. The supply side of the sex industry is predominantly composed of children from rural and poor areas in Thailand and neighboring countries. In order to overcome the complexity of child sex trafficking, the Thai Government also involved End Child Prostitution, Child Pornography and Trafficking of Children for Sexual Purposes (ECPAT), a non-governmental organization that work to eliminate child trafficking for sexual purposes since 1990. But, the child sex industry is still growing in Thailand. This research aims to analyze the factors that influence ECPAT’s work in order to combat child sex trafficking in Thailand, by using theory of collective action, compliance and NGO accountability.Based on the data and information provided which is also connected to the theories then lead to know NGO’s efforts to reach their goals. By looking at the external and internal factors of organization, it could then be seen the NGO’s challenges in achieving its goals. The hypothesis of this research is that ECPAT’s effort to address child sex trafficking in Thailand is still less effective, because even though during 2007 until 2009 the organization able to runs many programs as a result of donations received, there are external factors that hinder ECPAT’s work, such as the weakness of Thailand’s policy and the growing corruption in the country.
