Abstract :

The purpose of this research was to prepared coated wire cyanide ion-selective electrode (cyanide ion cwe) as potentiometric sensor to determine cyanide ion in Gadung (Dioscorea hispida Dennus) and their results were compared with the ultra violet (uv) spectrometry standard method. The sensor was composed of membrane based on aliquat 336-cyanide supported by the polymer mixture polyvinylchloride (PVC) - dibutylphthalate (DBP) with a ratio (% w/w) aliquat 336-Cyanide : PVC : DBP = 4: 44: 52 dissolved in tetrahydrofuran (THF) solvent in ratio 1:3 w/v which were directly coated on the surface of platinum wire (f 0.5 mm, L = 5 cm). Sensors showed nernstian slopes of 58.3 ± 0.58 mv/ decade of cyanide ion concentration over the range 1x10-4 to 1x10-1 M (0.26 to 2600 ppm KCN), with detection limit of 7.9 × 105m or 0.206 ppm, fast response time (45 s), satisfactory reproducibility, stable at pH 11-12, necessary precondition time for 12 hours in 0.1 M KCN solution and life time  of at least 60 days (2 months). The sensor showed good selectivity against CN- ions than PO43- ions, but slightly interfered by Cl- ions and they has been successfully applied in detecting cyanide in gadung samples besides uv spectrometry method.
