Abstract :

Cough is a defense mechanism of body in the respiratory tract that could occur as a symptom of disease or as a body reaction towards irritation in the throat due to the presence of mucus, dust, bacteria, virus, and others. It requires treatment when the symptom of cough experienced by the patient is disturbing and could affect one’s productivity. This study aims to find out the level of public knowledge about self-medication associated with selection and use of cough products in Kelurahan Airlangga, Kecamatan Gubeng, Surabaya. This research used a survey method on 100 respondents from local residents in productive age who had taken or were currently taking cough drug products by self-medication. The instrument of data collection used is questionnaire that contains questions about the efficacy, safety, and quality of cough drug products. The knowledge level of respondents about self-medication for cough was measured by the number of correct answers from the questionnaire. The results show that respondents who have high knowledge is 45%, 40% with moderate knowledge, and 15% with low knowledge. Therefore, efforts should be made to improve the knowledge of respondents about self-medication for cough.
