Abstract :

Since the mid-1990s there has been a growing body of research on the causes of wars. One of the most surprising and important findings is that natural resources, particularly lootable and valuable natural resource, play a key role in triggering, financing and prolonging these conflicts. Therefore, this article summarizes recent findings about the relation of natural resource abundance and war escalation in Democratic Republic of Congo. Coltan which is abundant in Congo was the most strategic mineral in progression of technological era at the end of 1990s. Coltan abundance became an attractive factor that increased the number of external actors involved in the Second Congo War. External actors exploited the Congo’s condition that was full of ethnic conflicts and state weakness. They intervened in the Second Congo War through economic activities both legally and illegally. This condition, finally, made coltan a chain-link that sustains and funds the conflict of Congo. In short, natural resources abundance can be the cause of war escalation through external actors manipulation on internal conditions of the owning state.
