Abstract :
Natural resources have long been object of interests in conflict studies. In the case where a conflict is taking place in a region, which is known for its resource abundance, it is generally perceived that the conflict is closely related with the resources itself. This paper examines the effects of diamond smuggling practice in Sierra Leone on the country‟s internal conflict that occurred in 1991-2002 by utilizing theories of natural resources and the onset of war, greed and grievance as well as third-party intervention. The paper then concludes that the diamond smuggling practice affects Sierra Leone‟s internal conflict in the following ways; (1) serving as a source of start-up cost for the insurgent to initiate the conflict and (2) lengthening the period of conflict by simultaneously providing the insurgents with funds, thus equipped them with ready arms and attracting foreign parties who benefit from the conflict to sustain the riot and maintain the advantages on-hand.
