Abstract :
The aim of this study is to compare the clinical results of fibrin glue versus Polyglycolic Acid (PGA) 10–0 suture for conjunctival autograft attachment after pterygium excision with mitomycin (MMC) application. A quasi experimental study at Dr. YAP Eye Hospital Yogyakarta, January until December 2010. Patients underwent standardized digital photograph and completed a questionnaire at each follow-up visit for grading pain, ephiphora, foreign body sensation and itching with visual analogue score (VAS). Thirty six eyes underwent primary pterygium surgery with conjunctival autograft were allocated into 2 groups, group 1 (n = 19) used fibrin gluewhereas group 2 (n = 17) used PGA 10–0 suture for attaching the autograft. There were significantly differences for foreign body sensation (p = 0.016) and severe degree of inflammation (p = 0.001) at day 2 whereas the glue group was less than suture. To determine whether generally fibrin glue is superior to PGA 10–0 suture similar researches need to be done to assess factors of recurrenceand cost-effectiveness analysis.
