The risk factors of human papilloma virus 18 on the recurrences of pterygium

Abstract :

This study which was done in nested case control study in prospective cohort design is aimed to analyze the risk factors of Human Papilloma Virus in the recurrence of pterygium. The samples were pterygium patients came at BLU RSUP Prof. R. D. Kandou Manado,Airmadidi Hospital, and Belang district primary health care provider who seek for medical help. The study was started on January 2010 until December 2010 with total samples were 99 patients and 104 eyes. 104 eyes was operated using Conjunctival Limbal Autograft(CLAG) technique with fibrin glue. PCR assessment of 104 eyes was 88 eyes positive with Human Papilloma Virus type 18 (HPV-18).52 patients (56 eyes) came to follow up; of which 48 eyes were recurrence with 47 eyes positive with HPV-18. HPV 18 has a strong role in the recurrence of pterygium (p < 0.05).
