Abstract :

ABSTRACT The novel Tujuh Musim Setahun foregrounds the enthusiasm of women in sex. Women are no longer constrained, but have their own desire and decision on their sexual enjoyment. In the novel sexual behaviours of female characters are described as having different expressions. Lara is obsessed with love, wild in sex, and unashamed about sexual activity. Selena’s sexual behaviours are characterised as normal and conventional, containing no passion in her sexual activity. She remains a virgin when she gets married. On the contrary, Mei considered a silent girl has in fact wild sexual behaviours. She admits that she never reaches orgasm in sex. Mei is also a person who likes to have sexual fantasies. Other characters, Phoebe and Iris, are lesbian partners that are overtly presented. Phoebe and Iris are willing to reveal their life as lesbian partners as they believe that “love differentiates no sexes”. All sexual behaviours and forms of opposition of female characters in the novel against patriarchal culture are efforts to express injustice they experience as women. In fact, they have the same right and obligation as men do with regards to sexuality, particularly sexual behaviours. A woman does not always act as the object of sexuality, but is entitled to have control as the subject of sexuality. This is because sexual enjoyment can occur if sexual activity is driven by shared desire and feelings and is encouraged by an awareness of shared responsibility.
