Abstract :
This study aims to look at the coping strategies used by nurses, more particularly psychiatric nurse in the face of aggressive behavior of mental patients who underwent treatment at Dr. Radjiman Wediodiningrat Lawang. In the circumstances of treatments, nurses must often faced with patients who do not support conditions, ranging from refusing treatment, revolted to hit the officer. These conditions will cause stress for nurses, nurse which eventually will develop ways to overcome this problem, among others, through coping stress. This study was conducted over a three-month study involving three subjects and one significant other, three are nurses who work on Intensive Psychiatry Care Unit of Mental Hospital Dr. Radjiman Wediodiningrat Lawang. All three subjects had the same experience that often times have to face the aggressive behavior of mental patients. This study used a qualitative approach with the case study method. The purpose of this study is to describe coping stress strategies used by nurses in the face of aggressive behavior of mental patients. The data analysis technique used in this study is a thematic analysis with the coding results of the interview transcripts that have been made verbatim and field notes. The results showed that nurses experienced stress when they required to face the aggressive behavior of mental patients. Stress that appeared is a minor stress comes from the community and social environment including the work, the stress also having the characteristics of Uncontrolled and Overload event which has the potential to increase the stress experienced by nurses. Stress experienced by nurses affects both biologically and psychosocial. To overcome this, the nurse uses mental coping stress strategies, both problem-focused coping, and emotion-focused coping. Both stress and coping stress experienced by the subjects of this study were conducted over resources is determined by the subject itself, namely internal and external sources, and not related with age and time of work services.
