Abstract :

This study aims to determine the meaning of smoking in young women smokers. Women’s smoking behavior in Indonesia’s culture is still considered taboo, but there are many young women who smoke, and moreover, its prevalence is increasing. This study is a qualitative research, with an instrumental case study approach. The subject who properly support this research are 4 young women smokers, questioned  by interview. Data analysis and coding using a data driven approach, according to Boyatzis (1998). In general, the result of smoking behavior in young women are influenced by the people around them whose smoking, such as family members and peers. Smoking behavior is a learned behavior, and individually interpreted by young women according to their own interpretation. Society’s negative stigma toward women smokers, also influence the creation of meaning in young women smokers. Young women’s meaning process of their smoking behavior is also influenced by the purpose of smoking. In conclusion, the meaning of smoking in young women by the results of this study are, smoking was a symbol of cool attitude, smoking became a symbol of rebellion, and smoking as a way to get easement. Cigarette is a loyal friend and a friend to share. Cigarette is poison favored by many people.
