Abstract :

Abstract: LBW  which  was  contributed  31%  in  causing  neonatal  deaths  were  able  to be  aided by exclusive breastfeeding and continue breastfeeding until 2 years of baby’s life. This research was aimed to identify factors influence breastfeeding behavior by mothers with age under 20 in Sidotopo, Surabaya. This study was observational descriptive research with cross sectional study design and qualitative approach. In-depth interview was done to 7 research subjects who were determined by purposive sampling method. The variables studied were behavior intention, accessibility of information, and personal autonomy of the mothers in giving breastfed. It was obtained that the behavior intention of the research subject was low. The accessibility of information regarding breastfeeding was low and late, consequently was obtained after giving birth. The personal autonomy of research subject was low because the subject tent to follow the advice of others to give infant formula or complementary feeding. Improvement of health promotion related to breastfeeding should be encouraged not merely for mothers but also others close to the mothers as the supporter to perform the behavior. It is expected that the knowledge of the mother with the age under 20 and those closest could be increased thus the mother realized the importance of breastfeeding and able to cope with the action situation that hinder the mothers to breastfeed.
