Abstract :
Abstract: Indonesia is one of the biggest countries in the matter of consuming cigarettes. In 2008, Indonesian people consumed 240 billions of cigarette bars or 658 millions of cigarette bars every day. Cigarettes have enticed people from all level of ages and professions including Kiai as well as santri in pesantren. Kiai is a prominent figure for santri to follow. He becomes a reference and model for santri in all aspects of life. This research is conducted to evaluate the role of religious figures toward the smoking behaviors of santri at Pondok Pesantren Al- Islah Kediri. The research is a descriptive research using qualitative approach. Thorough interviews are conducted toward 23 informants. The informants are taken out of population using inclusion criteria. The informants are male santri or board and are willing to be informants. The variables of the research are age, the sensation obtained from smoking, the confidence of obtaining blessing from the remnant of Kiai’s cigarettes, education, knowledge, regulation, the availability of cigarettes, the cost for buying cigarettes, santri smoking behaviour, and Kiai Smoking behavior. The result of the research shows that informants’ behavior of smoking is much influenced by people around them. Those who began smoking before entering Pondok are influenced by their fathers, grandfathers, and their friends. While those who began smoking after entering Pondok are caused by other smoking santri or Kiai. In conclusion, smoking behavior in Pesantren is influenced by not only outside but also inside environment. The inside environment intended is the influence from the fellow santri as well as Kiai, while outside environment is the influence from family ( father and grandfather) and friends.
