Abstract :The utilization of chloramphenicol on fishery productincluding shrimps, begins at the breeding, nurturing, post yieldprocessing, and marketing phases and continuous onto the foodindustry and fishery medicine industry phases effecting in remains ofchloramphenicol residue in shrimps for human consumption.Therefore the aim of this study was to prove that chloramphenicolresidue in shrimps for human consumption influences the appearanceof aplastic anemia. The study was a laboratory facto rial design conducted fromMay 5, 2004 until July 4, 2004 on 36 mice (Mus musculus species) byinducing the consumption of shrimps ( Penaeus monodon) withchloramphenicol residue of <0,3 ppb and of >0,3 ppb for 15 days, 30days, 45 days, and 60 days durations with three times repetitions.The results showed that chloramphenicol levels both <0,3 ppband >0,3 ppb had real influences on the appearance of temporaryaplastic anemia on mice when subjected to continuous consumptionsat extensive quantities and dur ations, marked by decrease in bloodhaemoglobin (Hb) from normal conditions as well as changes inerythrocyte form, indicate of the underdeveloped erythrocyte. Mice’sblood during experiment showed a positive indication ofchloramphenicol. Decreases in blood Hb occurred from the initialcondition of 16.521 g% to 13.281 g% at the 15 days duration, 13.672g% at the 30 days duration, 14.512 g% at the 45 days duration, andincreases to 15.562 g% at the end of the 60 days duration.Erythrocyte form changed from the normochrome normocyter initialcondition to the mild hypochrome normocyter, mild hypochromeanisocytosis, hypochrome anisocytosis , and subsequentlymacroerythrocyte dominated hypochrome anisocytosis at the end ofthe experiment. Interesting changes occ urred at the 30 days durationtreatment where mild hypochrome anisocytosis and hypochromeanisocytosis occurred marked by mildly pale cellular colorizations withcellular forms varying from normal, microerythrocyte, tomacroerythrocyte. The blood Hb and er ythrocyte cellular form normalconditions at the end of the experiment was indicative of resistancedue continuous consumption followed by the formation of newnormochrome normocyter erythrocytes.It is concluded that extensive quantities and durations of theconsumption of shrimps containing chloramphenicol residue effects inthe appearance of temporary aplastic anemia on mice marked by thedecrease of blood Hb and the change of erythrocyte cell forms. It issuggested to pursue a further research to ident ify the parameters fornon-hazardous chloramphenicol residue in shrimps for it to be safe forhuman consumption, as well as to determine the proper treatment andprocessing method to reduce chloramphenicol residue for safeconsumption.
