Abstract :
Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is one of the freshwater fish which has good prospective to develope. Tilapia has the important economic value and it is one of the superior commodity of freshwater. The important factor for developing cultivation of tilapia is availability of seed which has a good quality, quantity, and continuity. One attempt to increase the production and quality of tilapia has been carried out by UPTD Balai Benih Ikan Klemunan which produces single male breed by using monosex technique. Field work practice held on January, 16th 2012 until February 16th 2012. The methods which use in the Field work practice is descriptive method with collected data which involve primary data and secondary data. Retrieval of data got by observation, active participation, interview and literature studies. The activities of breeding tilapia by using monosex techniques include maintenance of brood, preparation of spawning pond, preparation and selection brood, spawning, harvesting larvae, immersion of larvae with the synthetic hormone 17α-Methyl Testosterrone, larval rearing, and harvesting the breed. During maintenance, the feed given to tilapia is 3 % of the biomass and carried out three times a day. Spawning of tilapia was done in natural that consisting of 300 breeding females brood and 100 males with a breeding ratio of 3 : 1. All of harvesting larvae were made after 15 days of spawning. After harvesting, larvae was soaked using synthetic hormone 17α-Methyl Testosterone with the purpose of breed produced androgynous males, and larvae of tilapia was maintained for a month. At the end of the maintenance period for 4 weeks of treatment with synthetic hormone SR 17α-Methyl testosterone in tilapia BEST is 81.9%.
